Booi pageant to showcase trainees’ skills

Krom and Knot fashion designer Zola Booi and his workshop trainees from the township are showcasing their garments in a fashion show and pageant at Gana Kakaza Hall, New Brighton from 2pm on Sunday.
The Ubuhle Bemvelo Pageant, Fashion Show and Beading Show, curated by Booi in partnership with the Arthur Wellington Methodist Church PE North Circuit, will see the seven women show the skills acquired during the training with Booi from September.
The event doubles up as a relaunch of the Fashion Entrepreneurship Programme Booi pioneered earlier in 2018.
The programme, set to train disadvantaged aspiring designers in garment construction and business free of charge, was put on hold after Booi suffered a hit-and-run in July.
“We were perfectly on schedule with the programme and we had just finished with our theory and we were looking forward to the practical learning but after the accident I was absent for [about two months] and based on that, I and the general manager of Damelin decided we should postpone it as it was going to be difficult to catch up with the amount of time lost,” Booi said.
Damelin College had committed to sponsoring a study bursary for the most excellent trainee throughout the programme.
The programme would commence early next year with preference given to the candidates who had already enrolled with the programme, Booi said.
“Candidates who wish to return to the programme are more than welcome and will be favoured in the recruitment process.“Candidates from the current workshop are also welcome to apply for the Fashion Entrepreneurship Programme,” Booi said.
Ubuhle Bemvelo Pageant, Fashion Show and Beading Show will start at 2pm and will feature work by Libon’lee Clothing designer Ndingalibona Rasana and visual artist Thembalethu Manqunyana. Tickets are R30 for adults and R10 for children, at the door.
