Spooky side of magic explored

The art of illusion takes a seasonally scary twist on Wednesday October 31 when Brendon Peel and Li Lau present Cabaret Magic: A Halloween Special at the Savoy Theatre.
The Bay entertainers will be bringing their all-new magic show to the Perridgevale theatre on the night of Halloween.
Illusionist Peel, known for his mentalism and magic tricks, will perform with escapologist Lau who will extricate himself from dangerous set-ups and perform stunts he has not previously shown.
“There has always been an air of magic and illusion surrounding the time of Halloween, so they are doing lots of mentalism with tricks exploring the spooky side of magic,” Savoy Theatre manager Rose Cowpar said.
“The very act of dressing up in a Halloween costume can be considered an illusion of sorts, not to mention that one of the most famous magicians of all time, Harry Houdini, died on Halloween!”
Peel and Lau were a hit at this year’s National Arts Festival with their show Carnival Sideshow and other Magical Things receiving good reviews.
Cowpar said Cabaret Magic: A Halloween Special was a rare chance to see their kind of performance up close and personal in cabaret style.
“We are going to be putting tables and chairs on the stage to enable the audience to see the magic up close. There will only be about 100 tickets sold, so it will be very intimate. And it also will be a family show, so it will be suitable for all ages.”
She said patrons were welcome to bring along a picnic supper or snacks. The Savoy has a cash bar and coffee bar, and finger snacks and platters also will be available.
Cabaret Magic: A Halloween Special starts at 8pm and tickets are R80 for adults and R60 for children and pensioners.
