Jason Kieck presents shimmering couture fashion show
Peacocks, koi and cherry-blossom infuse Whispers of the Orient at the Boardwalk
Peacocks, koi and cherry-blossom transformed the stage at the Boardwalk ICC last Saturday into a shimmering eastern wonderland at Jason Kieck’s couture fashion show Whispers of the Orient.
Kieck presented the annual fashion and entertainment extravaganza in aid of funds for the Igazi Foundation, a Port Elizabeth based charity which works with blood cancers across the country.
“We haven’t finalised the exact amounts yet but we are certain that it is over the half a million mark,” Kieck said on Tuesday.
This year for the first time the Kieck Igazi benefit was presented in two major cities, with Sun International hosting the first event at Sun Times Square in Pretoria in September, followed by the gala at the Boardwalk on Saturday October 20.
“Both were exceptionally well received and fantastic successes, with PE definitely having the ‘homeground advantage’,” Kieck said.
In addition to entertainment from operatic soprano Hlengiwe Mkhwanazi and a festive after-party with girl-group 3 Tons of Fun, guests were treated to a glittering, gauzy display of evening wear from Kieck.
MC Ian von Memerty introduced Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green in a glistening pale rose column by the designer.
Kieck presented designer gowns in three separate segments, each inspired by the East and in line with the theme “ Whispers of the Orient”.
PEACOCK
Kieck incorporated peacock feathers and used frosted knits, lace and tulle to emulate the peacock’s plumage, drawing on a palette of teals, deep blues, indigo, gold and turquoise.
KOI
Chiffons, satins, crystals and fluid fabrics that flow and sparkle and reflect were used to suggest the sinuous lines of the fins of the koi fish.He also mirrored the look of the waters that surround them with colours of coral, gold, white and aquas.
CHERRY BLOSSOM
For the final of the three fashion segments, Kieck moved to a paler colour scheme, a nod to the pale pink seen in spring when the cherry trees come into bud in the far east.
He used soft pastel hues in soft chiffons, tulles and silk with cherry blossom flowers and crystal dew drops.
The Nelson Mandela Bay designer rounded off the fashion show with a showstopper modelled by blood cancer survivor Yolanda Bukani.
She wore the strapless blood-red ball gown with a headpiece designed by Morris Luiters, who created several exotic headpieces for the show.
Images 1 and Bliss created hair and make-up to match the theme, giving a subtle oriental infusion to the night of glamour.
