Students flash their flair

Photography, fashion and textile design in the spotlight at Mandela Bay Fashion Week

Mandela Bay Fashion Week guests had a sneak peek at Nelson Mandela University talent on Friday night when photography, fashion and textile design students flashed their flair at Tramways in Central.
While the fashion and textile design senior students presented their work in fabric and garment form live on the ramp, the third year photography students had captured images of the garments as a real-world type training assignment before the night. There is more in store when the Visual Arts Graduate Exhibition opens on the Bird Street Campus at the Bird Street Gallery at 7pm on Thursday October 18 at 7pm. All fashion and textiles images taken by the university's photography students will be on display as well as fine arts, graphic design and photography students' third and fourth year graduate work.

Engle-Marie Louw, Shaunté Schaup, Mthetheleli Kulati, Liam Chellew and Khangelani Kota captured the vibrant colours and textures of the student designers' ranges against a carefully chosen backdrop that tied in with their themes.
Lerato Lepheana presented an all-white range titled Embodied and Hannah Maybery won a slot at the Vukani Fashion Awards with her Efflorescence range.
Habi Doucouré also won a place at Vukani Fashion Awards with her range Reimagining the Traditional African Child, as did Samantha Cunningham for her beige linen collection Return to Nature.

Mthetheleli Kulati shot the stills for the Work/Life Revolution range by Tayla Futcher and textile design student ReOrder by textile design student Esihle Mangqishi.
Eight of the 10 students were from the fashion department with two - Mangquishi and Shelby Horn - majoring in textile design.
Photography student Liam Chellew captured the work of Ayabulela Mzananda's Voyage collection as well as Luxurious Freedom by Sibulele Qodashe.
The exhibition of the work of NMU Bachelor of Visual Arts graduate students will be opened by Professor Rose Boswell, dean of the Faculty of Arts, at 7.30pm on Thursday at the Bird Street Gallery.
The large, combined show will feature sculpture, graphic design, ceramics, painting, textile and fashion design, printmaking and photography. It will be open from October 17 to 30 from 9am to 3pm on weekdays.
