Dementia and Alzheimer’s in focus at exhibition

An exhibition titled Forget-me-not, curated in response to dementia and Alzheimer's disease, will open at the GFI Art Gallery in Park Drive, Central, on Saturday at 10am.
The exhibition is a collaboration between the gallery at 30 Park Drive and the Eastern Cape branch of non-profit organisation Alzheimer's SA. Artists were invited to submit works responding to dementia and Alzheimer's disease for the exhibition, which will provide the organisation with an opportunity to raise funds through the sale of the works.
Participating artists include Jennifer Ord, Bretten-Anne Moolman, Ruth Nesbit, Graham Jones, Llise Dodd, Michael Barry, Alan Grobler, Jade Staples, Trevor Melville and Jeff Rankin, among others. Forget-me-not opens at 10am and Saturday’s opening address will be by psychiatrist Dr Reino Verster and clinical psychologist Mark Eaton.
The gallery’s Hayley Grinstead said two talks would also be hosted in October to tie in with the theme of the exhibition. The first, on Saturday October 6 at 10am, will be by Dr Leandre Gauche, a psychiatrist in private practice and previously the head of a state psychiatric hospital. The second talk, on October 13 at 10am, will see Reverend Roxane Jordaan discuss “all a family/carer needs in their toolbox to cope with the caring of a dementia patient”.Entrance is R20, and tea and coffee will be served.
The exhibition itself will run until October 13.
