Solo show just for Bay fans

Eastern Cape-born comedienne and former teacher Khanyisa Bunu returns to the Bay with a one-woman show at the Athenaeum tomorrow.
Bunu, whose star continues to shine bright, returns just months after tickling the funny bones of her Bay supporters at Kings & Queens of Comedy at the Boardwalk, alongside Tumi Morake, Ntosh Madlingozi, Loyiso Gola and other seasoned comedians, and more recently at the PE Opera House for another comedy show.
Bunu said the idea to hold the one-woman show, her first in the Bay, was motivated by how well she has been received by audiences here in the past.
“I have never brought my own show to PE and I’ve always enjoyed the PE audience so I thought, ‘let me bring them more of me rather than the glimpses of me they have seen,” Bunu said.
She also finds her comfort zone when performing in her home province, where audiences relate to her material.
Bunu’s material usually revolves around – or includes – stories about growing up in Whittlesea. Her show, New Year’s Resolutions, is a satiric look at the often false promises that people make themselves at the beginning of each year.
Bunu, who made history by becoming the first woman to win the audience choice award at the Comics’ Choice Awards, has made her mark on mainstream TV, having bagged acting roles on shows such as Scandal and Ses’ Top La.
The cherry on top was when she opened for now US-based Trevor Noah when he returned to South Africa with his sold-out show There’s a Gupta on My Stoep.
New Year’s Resolutions will be at the Athenaeum Theatre in Central tomorrow at 8pm. Tickets are R150 at the door.
