Property│Spotlight on Richmond Hill

Vibrant, fun and trendy Richmond Hill

Vibrant, fun and trendy are only some of the terms used to describe modern-day Richmond Hill.

The area, which was looking a little run-down not too long ago, has undergone a metamorphosis in the last few years and has truly become the place to see, and be seen.

Regarded as one of the most historyrich suburbs in Central, Richmond Hill is where classic architecture, quaint homes and cottages meet trendy shops, restaurants and venues. It’s one of Port Elizabeth’s first residential suburbs and homes in this area are once again extremely sought-after.

The Victorian and Old Edwardian semi-detached and freestanding cottages in Richmond Hill are protected by the Heritage board, which aids in creating a constant hint of yesteryear.

You will find various monuments in the area including Fort Frederick, a stone fort built in 1799 by the British Forces to defend the mouth of the Baakens River during the Napoleonic wars. Richmond Hill lies between Russell Road and Albany Road and is set at the base of the hill after

which it’s named. Although the area has a history that dates back around 155 years, it was only officially named in 1991.

Due to its central location and many restaurants and bars, it has become the venue for a multitude of celebrations – from birthdays to weddings.

One of the most popular venues for celebrations is The Granary. It is in an old warehouse in the popular Stanley Street. The warehouse, which was established as a bakery in 1925, is a shabby chic, yet modern mix of decor with exposed brick work and high ceilings and massive sliding wooden doors.

The venue is in good company as the area is gaining a reputation as Port Elizabeth’s culinary hub. The tables and chairs lining Stanley Street create a European outdoor cafe vibe and you would be hard-pressed to find a weekend when the street isn’t bustling with activity.

Street parties are not uncommon in the area with late night sales and live music to appeal to the younger, trendier crowd.

“I like Richmond Hill because it is the trendiest, hip-and-happening suburb in Port Elizabeth. It’s very exciting to have our shop in Richmond Hill,” Marjorie Erasmus, business owner
