Horsfield interprets soulful work

A NATIONAL Arts Festival music production Una Mattina features the piano works of contemporary composer Ludovico Einaudi whose music has been described as "a welcome sound of stillness in a hectic world".
Pianist Barbara-Ann Horsfield delivers soulful interpretations of what she describes as "beautiful and evocative piano works".
"[Einaudi's] music has been described as minimalist, ambient and deeply moving," she said.
Italian composer Einaudi has written music for a wide spectrum of cinema, theatre and dance, with his work being performed around the world.
His haunting compositions have kept him among the best-selling recording artists, particularly in Europe and the UK. He believes that music has the power to shape listeners' lives.
"I want to bring people together and to provoke emotions of happiness or sadness with my music," he says.
"I try to write music that will talk to them with a simple truth that touches their hearts." Horsfield has performed at the National Arts Festival for the past four years and her CD, Reflections, was recorded live at the 2010 fest.
She was born into an artistic family in Cape Town with her father being an artist and a jazz musician and her mother, Anna van der Westhuizen, a concert pianist.
Horsfield is a graduate of the University of Cape Town, where she studied with Michael Isador and Lamar Crowson.
She will be performing at the Beethoven Room in Grahamstown today at 2pm and Sunday at 11am and 6pm.
