For love and music

IF YOU have not yet made plans for Valentine's Day on Friday, the Port Elizabeth Gilbert & Sullivan (G&S) Society's annual cabaret, Be My Valentine, might be just the ticket. G&S president Rose Cowpar said the production was now in its sixth year and the audience could again expect a "sparkling cast, fabulous dancers and a large variety of songs from the stage, the charts and the classics that would get everyone in the Valentine's groove".

This year's cast was a showcase of Nelson Mandela Bay talent including "audience favourites, Showtime winners and stars of our G&S productions over the past year", she said.

"We are thrilled to have people like Paul Leonard and his daughter, Crystal, James Smith, Kasvia von Memerty, Bronwyn Maree and the stunning Liske Potgieter performing this year.

"Also joining are Ralph Eggels as well as Mark Gertse, who was great fun during Pirates of Penzance last year.

"One of our most exciting young singers in the show is Kerry-Lee Jeffrey, lead singer of Juliet to November, who have been making quite a name for themselves.

"There are some interesting people in the cast, such as Jody Butler, who last year did his first show – the Valentine's cabaret.

"He then featured in Sounds of South End, then starred in Pirates of Penzance and won a Showtime Award for best actor – all in one year.

"Joining them will be Valentine's regulars Richard Campbell and myself, plus some wonderful special guests."

Cowpar, who is directing the production, last Friday won the Clover special achievement award at the annual Showtime awards.

This year's song line-up will include hits from Evanesence, The Phantom of the Opera, Nine, Whitney Houston, Elton John, the Eurythmics, classic jazz and blues plus some foot-tapping group numbers to get the audience grooving.

"We really have something for everyone."

The Valentine's cabaret is not just being staged on the day of love on Friday, but runs from Thursday to Saturday at 7.30pm at the Savoy Theatre in Adcockvale.

Tickets are R60 per person or R450 for a table of eight, "so get your friends together, bring along your picnic baskets and enjoy some great entertainment", Cowpar said.
