Centrestage combines two of its chart-topping shows

THE hits of two of the greatest soft rock groups of all time will be combined in a Centrestage double-bill titled The Best of Simon & Garfunkel and Fleetwood Mac. The tribute show, which according to Centrestage founder Gary Hemmings focuses on "subtle instrumentation, textured harmonies and emotional interpretation", will take place at the Old Grey Club in Lenox Street tonight and tomorrow night.

Hemmings said the double-bill special would provide fans with the chance to enjoy the best of both groups, with one half of the show dedicated to beloved song-writing duo Simon & Garfunkel and the other half of the show rocking out to the blues-filled-songbook of Fleetwood Mac.

"The feedback from audiences at the individual shows was so overwhelming that we decided a combination of both shows was a must," Hemmings said.

"I think it's the perfect blend, or rather musical recipe, for a Centrestage show.

"With both of the individual shows having made my all-time favourites list, this combined show is bound to take the number one spot."

The Simon & Garfunkel tribute will be led by Neil Thomson and Roger Gilson.

"Thomson is the ideal Paul Simon stand-in with his articulate guitar finger-work and a deep understanding of the folk genre, while Gilson's insanely clear, high voice makes him a perfect match for Art Garfunkel."

Andre Strydom, known for his fronting roles in Centrestage tributes to the likes of The Bee Gees and Neil Diamond, will lead the Fleetwood Mac tribute.

The band once again consists of a group of impeccable vocalists and musicians and includes Strydom's daughter and singing partner Caron Strydom, well-known vocalist Tara-Jane Stern, maestro fingers Fenlin Pitie and Lynne Cosme, guitarist Hugo Kleinhans, drummer Devon van Rooyen and percussionist John Dickens.

"The musical ensemble pays loving tribute to the 1960s icons in a way in which the respect for and adoration of the music is palpable and highly infectious," Hemmings said.

"The much-loved songs are recreated with authenticity and given a wonderfully sympathetic treatment."

Audience members can expect songs such as Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way and Dreams, and Simon & Garfunkel's The Sound of Silence, Homeward Bound, Mrs Robinson and Bridge over Troubled Water.
