Life issues play out on Uitenhage stage
Shafiq Kalumo present two plays, music and crafts at the Uitenhage Town Hall
Shafiq Kalumo will present two plays, music and crafts at the Uitenhage Town Hall on Thursday, November 29 at 6pm.
Bay playwright and actor Xabiso Zweni has reworked Kalumo’s play Nzika (The Citizen) and will direct it.
Nzika has a cast of three and centres on a foreign national looking for asylum in SouthAfrica, addressing issues such as xenophobia, mob justice and corruption.
“We want to take this production to the National Arts Festival in 2019,” Kalumo says.
The Stageworld graduate has written a second play, A Happy Ending, which will be performed by Uitenhage high school drama students.
He wrote this to help to create awareness of the dangers of illegal abortions and other issues young girls may face.
“Both plays are filled with beautiful folk songs, dramatic movements and images,” Kalumo said.
“Uitenhage has been deprived of theatrical performances for a very long time now. It is time I bring theatre to Uitenhage just like Madoda Ndlakuse brought book-reading sessions.”
Taf Lion International will entertain guests on arrival with marimba; the Capricorns from Kwanobuhle will do a short set from their new EP, and the Black Roots and Nkazana Creation will show African crafts.
Tickets are at R50 single, R80 double and high schools R20. Further information from Kalumo, 074-663-1195.
