Classical cellist and pianist for NMU recital

Port Elizabeth Music Society invites Peter Martens and Bryan Wallick to play

The Port Elizabeth Music Society has invited cellist Peter Martens and pianist Bryan Wallick to a recital on Wednesday, October 17, in the NMU South Campus Auditorium. PE Music Society president Dr Erika Bothma said she was excited about the concert, which would start at 7.30pm.“I tried to include Peter Martens in our series for quite some time, and to hear him partnered by Dr Bryan Wallick will be something very special,” she said.
For their recital in Port Elizabeth, they chose to play the following works:

Bach’s Solo Cello Suite No 3 in C Major, BWV 1009;
Beethoven’s Cello Sonata No 3 in A major, Op 69;
Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata Op 19 in G Minor.
Martens studied with Dalena Roux at Stellenbosch University, Heidi Litchauer, at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and holds a master’s degree from the University of Cape Town.
In 1993, Peter returned to South Africa and occupied principal positions in the New Arts Philharmonic and Cape Philharmonic before moving to the University of Stellenbosch where he currently holds the positions of director of the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival and artistic administrator of the department of music.
Peter is now artistic director of the award-winning Stellenbosch University Camerata which recently teamed up with Joshua Bell in performances of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in Cape Town and Stellenbosch.
Peter ordinarily plays on a Lockey Hill cello, but inspired by the historically informed performance practice movement, has recently acquired a baroque cello too.
Wallick is gaining recognition as one of the great American virtuoso pianists of his generation. Gold medallist of the 1997 Vladimir Horowitz International Piano Competition in Kiev, he has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and South Africa.
He studied with Jerome Lowenthal in New York City, where he was the first Juilliard School graduate to receive both an undergraduate Honors Diploma (2000) and an accelerated Master's Degree (2001).
He continued his studies with Christopher Elton in London at the Royal Academy of Music, where he was the recipient of the Associated Board International Scholarship, receiving a post-graduate diploma with Distinction.
Wallick is also committed to chamber music and he has performed on tours with violinists, Yi-Jia Susanne Hou, Miriam Contzen, Sergei Malov, Zanta Hofmeyer and cellists Wolfgang Emmanuel Schmidt, Peter Martens and Anzel Gerber.
He has also recently taken over as the artistic director of Schalk Visser/Bryan Wallick Concert Promotions, which hosts many international musicians who perform tours throughout South Africa.Ticket prices range from R35 to R95.
