Mohair sales still strong

THE mohair market continued to deliver strong results at the fourth sale of the summer season held in Port Elizabeth.

Mohair SA media and communications officer Robyn Rutters said a total of 164091kg was offered at this week's sale and 96% of the total offering was sold.

"The market continued to deliver strong results. The kid market experienced continued strong demand, which can be partly attributable to the quality of individual clips on offer.

"The average market indicator gained 4.7% from the previous sale to close on R154.34 per kg. There was again strong competition among all buying houses, with exporters of greasy mohair taking up a bigger portion of the offering than usual, despite a stronger currency," she said.

Fine adults were the only sector of the clip experiencing a small correction, mainly due to shorter hair on offer, Rutter said. The highest price of R632/kg was paid for a 24 microns super-style kid mohair bale.

Compared to the previous sale, prices were: Kids (summer) up 6.9%, young goats (summer) up 4.8%, fine adults down 3.6% and strong adults up 4.0%

The next mohair sale is due on May 13.

ýNo wool sale took place at Cape Wool SA this week. The next wool sale is due on Wednesday when about 11 000 bales will go under the hammer.
