Unblocking the jobs bottleneck

A NELSON Mandela Bay family business is tackling unemployment – tap by tap. The contractor, David Stuthard Plumbing & Electrical, trading as DSP Plumbers, is now in its second year of training young and unemployed youth from the Bay.

The trainees, both men and women, form part of an eight-month rotational training programme where they learn how to install water meters for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and perform pipe laying, pipe unblocking and the installation of pipes.

DSP Plumbers trainee Mfundo Maxhama, 21, who lives in Marikana in Booysen Park, said he battled to find a job before starting as a trainee last year. "People want you to have experience. I really enjoy learning new things."
