Thousands evacuated as Philippines hit by Typhoon Melor

More than 700,000 people were evacuated in the Philippines as Typhoon Melor slammed into the country’s eastern coast, civil defence officials said. Melor was packing maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometres per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 185 kph when it hit land over Northern Samar province, the weather bureau said.
