Super prizes for marathon


WITH the addition of a corporate relay and a fantastic array of prizes, organisers of the The Herald Rafi's Friendly City Marathon which starts and ends at the Altona Primary School in Greenbushes on Saturday, are expecting a bumper entry.


In addition to the marathon there will be a 10km race and a 5km Corporate Challenge and fun run.


This year's nominated charity is Retina SA which will receive R5 of every R25 Corporate entry fee.


Partially-sighted Ilse Carstens who won gold and silver at the Paralympic Games will be in Port Elizabeth as the Friendly City Marathon and Retina SA's guest of honour.


Carstens will be hosting a beneficiary breakfast in aid of Retina SA at Walmer Golf Estate on Friday.


The cost of the hot breakfast together with Ilse's inspirational message is R100 per person.

According to Achilles Club race director Wayne Mitchell, the event boasts a fantastic variety of prize incentives, valued at more than R40000.


Lucky draw prizes include 14 appliance prizes from Rafi's Appliances and Mattresses, valued at more than R17000, six pairs of running shoes from Adidas valued at R8000, R5000 worth of Jenni Collections Swarovski crystal jewellery and a getaway at Kuzuko Lodge, valued at R10000.


Pre-race registration will take place at Rafi's Appliances and Mattresses in Newton Park on Friday evening from 5pm to 7pm.


The entry fee is R75 for the marathon, R40 for the 10km and R25 for the 5km corporate challenge and fun run.


The temporary licence for the marathon and 10km is R25.


Marathon runners 65 and older will only pay 50% of the race fee.


Entry forms are available from Rafi's Appliances and Mattresses, Brian Bands and sports stores in the bay.
