Rewarded for effort

ZANOXOLO Primary School’s hard work at being greener received a much needed boost from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality on May 22.

The NU1 school had 10 trees planted and were given refuse bags. Pupils cleaned the school, and were also taught about the dangers of littering.

"We were selected because the municipality was looking for greener schools to take part in this environmental awareness evaluation around the metro.

"We have always made an effort to keep the school grounds clean and green – it is an ongoing process,” said school principal Thembeka Veto.

"The school is so grateful and happy about this whole thing. I always preach to my pupils the importance of not littering.”

Municipal environmental management’s environmental educator Patrick Basi, said pupils were the right people to speak to about environmental issues.

"These children come from all over Motherwell, so we know when we speak to them, we speak to the whole community.

"They will go back home and pass the knowledge that we have shared with them to others.

"Trees help in climate change and we always encourage schools, clinics and the community to plant them,” he said.

Veto also took the opportunity to ask for assistance.

"We have a garden, but we need seeds to help feed our children. We are also in need of dustbins.”
