Poet Adam aims for the big time

IT HAS only been two years since 23-year-old Siyabonga Adam started writing poetry seriously and he already has plans of staging shows all over the Eastern Cape and beyond.

Adam, known as Simba Da Poet, was born at Kwazakhele, but moved to Motherwell NU 11 when he was nine.

A few years ago, he began performing rap music "but, after a lot of people told me rap does not really suit me, I decided to do poetry", Adam said.

Growing up listening to Ntsiki Mazwayi, Simbone and Ngqo, he picked up a lot of inspiration from them and their poetry.

"I write most of my poems in isiXhosa and some of them in English as well.

"I get inspiration from my everyday life, and from things that are happening around me.

"I write mostly about love.

"That is because I have noticed that people love listening to songs and poems about love," Adam said.

So far the artist has recorded two poems and turned them into a song, featuring well- known hip-hop artist from Motherwell Mxo.

"The reason I only started recording now is because I was still busy writing material, and I have recorded only two poems – From a Friend to a Friend, and Ubuhle Bakho [Your Beauty]."

Like many artists, Simba has big plans of being well known around the Eastern Cape, and performing on stage for big crowds nationally.

"I want to be among the best poets in the country.

"I also want to be a live performer," Adam said.
