ONE of the Bay’s upcoming jazz bands will be using their love of music to give back to their community through a musical project partnered by Masifunde Learner Development in Walmer Township.
The four-member jazz group, VuDu, have named the project “Siyacula, Siyafunda, Siyakhula”, which translates to “we are singing, we are learning, we are growing”.
The project incorporates music education as well as fundraising for the building of the organisation’s Lavel’ilanga Education Centre in Walmer Township.
The project will run in four-week cycles, incorporating music workshops for selected members of Masifunde’s choir and drama group. The first cycle began last month.
The launch took place on July 28 at Coco de Mer with a charity concert. The event included a performance by the VuDu jazz band and supporting acts Ntsika, Umle and various performers from Walmer Township.
Band drummer Kristo Zondagh and lead vocalist Sisanda Myataza, have always wanted to do something for the community, and discovered that the one passion they had in common was education. Besides drumming and singing, Myataza is a media student, while Zondagh is studying architecture.
“The two of us have had opportunities that many young people in South Africa only dream about, ” said Myataza.
“I know what it is to dream big and not be able to see beyond your circumstances and I like what Masifunde is doing, giving pupils the tools and the confidence they need to take on the world.”
“I’m excited about passing on the knowledge I have accumulated over the years to these kids, and I can’t wait to get started with the workshops”, Zondagh added.
Masifunde Learner Development is currently in the process of building Lavel’ ilanga, a new educational centre in the heart of Walmer Township.
Lavel’ ilanga means “Here comes the sun”.
The idea for the educational centre was born in 2009. The aim of the Lavel’ ilanga centre is to increase the quality of education in Walmer Township. The target group – the Youth of Walmer Township – was involved in the planning process from the beginning.
