POPULAR Eastern Cape hip hop artist from Motherwell, Laz Macaza (aka Phindile January) , was raised in Grahamstown but later moved to the Motherwell township in Port Elizabeth. It is here that his musical career began. Inspired by local hip hop artists, and from what he heard on the radio, he knew that music was his future.

"My career started as a choreographer, but music was something that was close to my heart, because all my friends were doing music and I was busy with choreography at the time," January said.

In 2008 he released his first independent hip hop album titled Sgub'sasebhayi which sold over 3000 copies. The album was well received by the public and helped Laz Macaza make a name for himself in the industry. The album's hit single is still being aired on radio stations such as Umhlobo Wenene, Y-FM, True FM, KQ FM and Kowie FM.

Laz Macaza said he had the privilege to share a stage with top hip hop artists including Ringo, HHP, Big Nuzz, DJ Cleo and Zakes Bantwini.

He was also one of the performers chosen for the opening ceremony at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium during the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup.

This talented artist has also worked with local producers on a number of albums including Deep Minded's Best of Bay and Linda Mahobese's Fingerman. His collaborative works include projects with international gospel star Thembinkosi, Mara (of akhomntu wamntu fame), Dennis, CJ and DJ Frisko.

He is now compiling a CD with a number of Wild Coast artists, and he has also joined a group called TIVI.

"My singing career is going in the right direction so far and I am happy about it. We are shooting a video soon with my group and I am very happy with my career," January said.
