Lack of luck for Callies

CALLIES were probably the unluckiest team in the R200000 Safa-NMB MTN Games which ended at the Wolfson Stadium on Saturday, with Kuyasa United emerging the winners.

The Londt Park outfit was the only team in the tournament to go through the round robin stage with a 100% record leading up to the semifinals.

In the first match in the knock-out stage they beat Moonlight City 2-0 and in the quarterfinals they thrashed Zwide Celtics 4-0, with John Giannakis and Zaahid Dolley scoring a brace each.

However, in the semifinals on Saturday they came unstuck against Glenville, losing 4-2 on penalties after the teams were tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation time.

As a consolation, Callies striker John Giannakis won the top goalscorer of the tournament award.

Glenville had a tough route to the final. They finished second in their group and advanced to the final via penalty shootouts in their next three matches. Zwide soccer outfit Kuyasa United won R10000, a trophy, medals, a set of jerseys and 10 match balls when they beat Glenville 2-1 in the finals.

As runners-up Glenville received R5000, a set of jerseys and five match balls

The 16 teams in the knockout stage received playing kit from the sponsors.
