THE Countdown to Success campaign, which was started three years ago, by an NPO called The Initiative, is giving boys from Mfesane High in grades 10, 11, and 12 an opportunity to be among those who were mentored for a day in a campaign called Men in the Making.
This campaign was started in 2009, when Cell C started Take a Girl Child to Work. Pricewater houseCoopers, an auditing firm, saw that the same should be done for boys.
Countdown to Success is one of the campaigns of The Initiative, which was started to help high schools in Motherwell reach their highest potential when it comes to their studies and to broaden their knowledge in skills and success.
Sandiswa Adams, who is the founder of the NPO, said when they started the NPO they were hands-on, they went to school and tutored maths and accounting.
“When the project started we adopted Ncedo High School in NU10, we did maths classes with them.
“We even got them a donation of 150 calculators to help them.
“We even had a 100% turn around pass rate of 26% to 58% in pure maths,” Adams said.
When the project grew they adopted a second school, Imfesane in NU12, where they also help in maths, science, accounting, maths literacy and life skills.
They also recently donated R100000 worth of school material.
“We have a man from Cape Town from Casio Calculators who is going to be teaching pupils from Mfesane how to use the calculators we recently gave.
“There are many functions on them which they need to know about.”
