Honoured in remembrance of tragic day at beach

MOTHERWELL Rugby Club was honoured with the public award from the Port Elizabeth Rotary Club on April 26 at a gala event at the Kelway Hotel.

The Port Elizabeth Rotary Club’s 87th birthday was also celebrated at the event.

Chevrolet Warriors’ commercial manager, Leigh Deyzel said they chose Motherwell Rugby Club because of the recent tragedy when six players – Masixole Myosana, 29, Anelisa Mbuzeli, 21, Avuyile Tshabalala, 18, Lundi Ramba, 29, Arthur Peters, 29 and Xolisa Nyembezi, 28 – drowned at the Bluewater Bay Beach after a training session.

"We choose recipients based on whether they have been outstanding in their field, or if they have suffered a great loss as in their case,” Deyzel said.

"They lost their players but still went on to play in the Easter Tournament in Cape Town. They did it for those who died.”

In his response club president, Vusumzi Brown said: "This will definitely motivate the players to do better.

"This award shows that there are still people out there who still care.”
