Grade 8 pupil earns top spot

A GRADE 8 pupil of Victoria Park High School astounded competitors by winning the EC Pentathlon Fencing Women's Challenge held at the Boma, NMMU on April 9.

Skye Ruffer, 14, only started epee fencing in September after Olympic fencing fever hit Nelson Mandela Bay.

"She just loves it," mom Sharon said of the girl who describes herself as not being into sports at all.

Skye is a left-handed fencer and the youngest of the group.

Her next big epee fencing competition will be the KZN Open Fencing Championships on April 28 in Durban. Other EC women fencers who have been selected are: NMMU students Ivana Simic and Liem Sieders, Varla King, Jade Hooke and Shani Smit.

The men's competition was won by top EC fencer and modern pentathlete Jon-Paul Raper, an ex-pupil of Victoria Park High School.

Excelsior EC Fencing men who will be competing at the KZN Open are: Raper, NMMU Sebastian Lasevicius and Graham Holmes, Tristan Lasevicius, Zola Hlazi, Ockert Fourie, Peter Lynch, and Chad Putnam.
