RISING stars and a record of awards are some of the things the Gelvandale Hockey Club is proud of.
It is a community- based hockey club and consists of 500 members.
The club was established in 2000 through the amalgamation of three major hockey clubs in the Northern Areas, namely Maple Leaf, Lotus and Alpha.
A lot of children in the Northern Areas are victims of poverty and do not have many opportunities.
The club was established to create room for these children to have an opportunity to shine.
Hockey is very popular in the Northern Areas. However, there are no programmes or organisations that educate and train young, talented players.
“Unfortunately, this capacity has been well tapped in many places due to the lack of financial and material support, voluntary leaders, sufficient coaching and administration,” chairwoman Belinda Scott said.
Scott went on saying that in order to breach that gap, the hockey club started the mini-hockey and a youth programme.
The vision of the club is to become the club of first choice and their mission is to provide its members with the best hockey opportunities and to build up greats sportsmen and women.
“The club has been awarded the prestigious club of the year award by the Eastern Province Hockey Federation for two consecutive years now.”
In 2007, the premier men’s team were runners-up in their category and the first league men and women won their respective categories. The following year, the premier men’s team became the title holder of their respective lead category.
The premier ladies have also managed to secure their premiership title from 2010 to 2011 and came second last year.
The president men who were also firsttime title holders in 2011, moved to the premier league, and this means that there are two men’s teams in the Eastern Province Hockey League.
Furthermore the first league men have made an astonishing record for winning the league for 10 consecutive years since 2000. However, they dropped to second place in 2010 and regained their league position in 2011 and last year.
Other teams have also produced excellent results with the president ladies finishing in third place for two consecutive years, and the two new youth teams proved to be a force to be reckoned with the girls winning their league and the boys taking fifth place.
All the players in the club have been achieving and working hard constantly.
