Community tackle crime

WEST End residents have proved crime fighting does not require a badge, it just requires proactive community members who are aware of the needs of the community and are willing to do their best to ensure that they are met.

The West End Sub Sector Crime Forum (WESSCF) is comprised of a group of community members who have recognised that the primary reason why crime is committed is poverty.

Although the main focus of the forum is to reduce crime in the community, they focus on other aspects (such as lack of food and shelter) that reduce the quality of life.

"By changing our mind sets, we can change the outer aspects of our lives," said Fuzlin Rowan, the public relations officer for the WESSCF .

Members of the WESSCF are adequately trained in order to prepare themselves for all situations while patrolling, they are also trained on procedure relating to crime prevention in order to do everything within the confines of the law.

With the motto of the forum being "working together for a safer community", they seek, attract and retain members in order to ensure more visibility, are able to patrol longer shifts and cover the area more frequently.

They are "engaging the local community in the challenges identified, such as cleaning up of bushes in and around our area".
