Close-knit family with a difference

THE Wepeners from Ben Kamma are a close-knit family that love hiking and snorkelling.

The family spends most of their free time together, although they are not all living under the same roof.

"We have an older son who is married, but when we go camping he comes with us," father Neville, an acting principal at Newton Park Primary School, said.

"Every Sunday we go to church and have lunch and watch a movie afterwards. Chanique, our daughter, bakes something for us. That is our tradition," Neville said.

According to Betsie, a Grade R teacher, her husband is an honest and fair man, who keeps discipline at home.

As in any other family, there is a talkative member. In the Wepener family's case, eldest son, Luhann, is the talker.

"My son Luhann talks a lot. When we go out with him he talks to everyone and we usually have to wait for him to finish talking," Neville said.

"Having grown-up children has made our lives less busy. And it is nice because they help around the house even though they leave our wallets empty," the mother said.

"Our parents always put us first, they would leave their own work for a while to help us with ours and somehow they put up with the silliness," Chanique said.
