Christmas is here!

WITH only 75 sleeps till the fat man comes down the chimney it is no surprise that the travelling Christmas Shop will open its doors tomorrow.

The travelling shop was the brainchild of cousins Evy Evlambiou and Maria Markides who are bringing the Christmas spirit to the people of Port Elizabeth for the 13th year.

The two also head up Red Feather Trading at the 9th Avenue Shopping centre.

Evy explained the Christmas shop had blossomed from its humble beginnings in a store the size of a room in Rink Street, and had found a different home every year.

This year the Christmas Shop will open its doors at the Moffett on Main Lifestyle Centre in Walmer for the second consecutive year.

Although the store started many moons ago it is Evy and Maria's love for Christmas that helps them spread cheer every year.

"It started because we came across unusual and exclusive Christmas decorations and we wanted to share our Christmas treasures.

"And what is better to spread joy than some beautiful decorations that have travelled the globe to get here?," asked Evy.

Maria said that this year they are taking things a bit more seriously than previous years when they have had Disney characters Christmas decor in the store. This year visitors will be delighted with their special displays.

"Our theme this year is The Spirit of Christmas, and we want visitors to feel uplifted when they come into the store."

The cousins agree that Christmas is one of the most joyous times of the year where people are full of smiles.

Creative director for the store is Mark Mans who has been with the cousins for many years in their Red Feather Trading store.

"Mark came up with the wonderful creations in the store," said Evy.

Mark and his team of merry helpers, including Evy and Maria, have been working since the beginning of August to get the store up and running and it promises to warm any Scrooge's heart.

Baubles hang from the ceilings in all shapes, sizes and colours and the special compartments along the left side of the shop are filled with every Christmas knick-knack imaginable.

This year's piece de resistance has to be an old-fashioned TV which plays various Christmas carols and has moving pictures.

The battery operated miniatures of children peering into Santa's workshop are also a new attraction at the store.

"Every year we try and make it as unique and different as possible for visitors of all ages. We try and change things up a bit to keep it interesting," said Maria as she decorates a giant tree with unusual decorations.

On Saturday, as a special treat for children, Uncle Jumbo will be in front of the Christmas shop from 10am to noon so children can meet Noddy and friends for the opening of the Christmas Shop.

There will be lots of games, singing, face painting and more.

There is no charge for the party but donations will be accepted.

All proceeds will be given to charity.
