IT is an acknowledged fact that the 2010 Fifa World Cup cost Nelson Mandela Bay ratepayers a whopping R878-million – R538-million over budget – and plunged the metro into the financial mess it is in.
The provincial Treasury underpaid by R459-million.
Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile and the ANC are quite prepared to make the same mistake again by spending a possible further unbudgeted R43-million or so on hosting the Afcon 2013.
There is no item in the 2012/2013 budget for Afcon 2013. There are no written guarantees from national or provincial government for funding, only pledges. The message is clear.
The mayor and the ANC are telling Walmer Township residents – and about 30000 other households who still use the bucket system – that if they can afford to buy tickets to watch the Afcon matches, they will have to continue to use the bucket system.
