Matric of the Year 2012

THE 2012 Weekend Post/ NMMU matric of the Year gala finale took place at the NMMU South Campus auditorium in Nelson Mandela Bay on Saturday September 22. The event is now in its 19th year and again saw the province’s most well-rounded matrics being rewarded. The overall matric of the year winner was Edward Hoskin of Grey High School, while our 2012 Scholarship winner from a previously disadvantaged community was Orcilla Howard, of Uitenhage High School. J-Bay Billabong 2012

IDEAL waves and the first – and hopefully not the last – perfect 10 made for an exciting start to the Billabong Pro in Jeffreys Bay yesterday. Australian surfer Nathan Hedge scored the 10 and bagged 19.27 points, as competitors battled it out on 1.2m to 1.8m waves. These pictures by Fredlin Adriaan show the final practice.

Dream come true

Every little girl dreams of being a beauty queen, so Reach For A Dream made this happen for a couple of Nelson Mandela Bay girls. Miss South Africa Melinda Bam spent the morning with the girls at the Protea Marine Hotel in Port Elizabeth, where they were treated to a pampering session, crowning ceremony and tea party. Struggling in Struandale

Single mother Misiwe Masinimi, who is HIV positive, lives in a rundown shack in Ramaphosa, Struandale and had to take care of her daughter, Noluthando, 17, her mentally and physically disabled sister, Nomathamsanqa, 31, and Nomathamsanqa’s daughter, Unathi, on whose child support they all survive. Iron Man 2012

THE Bay’s incredible party spirit helped the world’s top Ironman competitors conquer the strong wind and cold weather to grab the winning spots yesterday.

The Colourfully clad dressed spectators lined the streets cheering, singing and blowing vuvuzelas as the athletes ran and cycled past them.

They had 10 000 rattles and “bang-bangs” distributed among them to cheer the competitors along.

Armed with blankets, coffee, boerewors rolls and camp chairs, spectators braved the cold to be part of the festivities.

Others chose to watch the race from the warmth and comfort of their own homes, only peering out of their seaside balconies to get a glimpse of the action.

Cheetahs attack tourist at Kragga Kamma Game Park

Scottish tourist Violet D’Mello was mauled by two cheetahs at the Kragga Kamma Game Park in Port Elizabeth as she was trying to protect a seven-year old Bay boy on Saturday (28/04/2012). Cleary Estate family Glenda and Samuel Malan, and their children – Cassidy, 11, Camryn, 8, and Calum, 7 – were also there. Camryn was also attacked. Violet’s husband, Archibald captured the attack on camera.

Fashion Eco Warriors

Victoria Park High pupils put their best feet forward to raise money for the Save the Rhino Project yesterday. The school’s Environmental Caring Organisation (Eco) held a fashion show yesterday where at which clothes made from recycled materials graced the runway. Pupils paid to attend the show and a corporate sponsor provided prizes. All money collected will go be donated to the project. Pictures: EUGENE COETZEE
