AFTER months of training, five DF Malherbe High School pupils have qualified as surf lifesavers with the Sardinia Bay Surf Lifesaving Club.
School sports organiser Dewald van Staden, who also qualified.
They completed the qualifying examination in December at Kings Beach.
The examination required them to rescue each other from the water, and complete Malibu rescues and run-swim-run exercises.
More technical aspects such as hand signal communication, CPR testing and “vomit drills” were also tested.
The DFM team tackled all physical challenges with great enthusiasm and endurance, and their training allowed them to act as lifesavers during the December holiday break.
“Without the help of the SBLC [Sardinia Bay] team we would not have been able to complete the course,” an excited Van Staden said.
