Bok No 8 Duane Vermeulen managed to scoop the SA Rugby Player of the Year award, the Players’ Player of the Year, as well as the Super Rugby Player of the Year award at the SA Rugby Awards ceremony last night.
A tearful Vermeulen dedicated the award, to among others, his late father.
“My dad passed away when I was eight. He played provincial [rugby] and I just wanted to go one better. Now I just live his dreams and ambitions.”
Vermeulen pipped Nizaam Carr, Marcell Coetzee, Willie le Roux and Handre Pollard to the main title.
Winning the award capped a remarkable turnaround for the Stormers’ backrower. He had been plagued by serious injury but became a mainstay in Bok coach Heyneke Meyer’s team over the last few seasons.
