Van Niekerk faces uphill battle to win gold after only just qualifying
The 400m world champion only just qualified for tonight’s 200m final in the seventh-fastest time overall, which suggested he could struggle to make the podium, let alone bag gold.
In fairness, Van Niekerk might still have been feeling the effects of retaining his world crown the previous night, and he has 24 hours to get his legs ready for what appears to be the greatest challenge of his career to date.
