Final against Old Grey to be under lights

The T20 Mayoral Cricket Cup will conclude with a bang when Mecer Madibaz 1 take on Seaman’s Renault Old Grey in the final under lights at St George’s Park tomorrow (6pm).

After three rounds of frantic round-robin and playoff matches, an inaugural competition champion will be crowned before the 50-over league starts on Sunday.

Madibaz 1 will start as favourites to win for the mere fact that they have dominated Eastern Province premier league titles for some time now.

But Old Grey will be no pushovers and they will take heart in the fact that SuperSpar Despatch beat the students in the last round-robin fixture last Saturday.

Madibaz 1, however, still managed to qualify for the semifinals on the back of an unusual points system.

They put that behind them on Sunday to beat newly promoted Motherwell by 81 runs to qualify for the final. Old Grey booked their spot by easing past Buco Uitenhage.

The competition was only recently given Mayoral Cup status, to follow in the footsteps of a number of other codes.

EP Cricket president Donovan May said yesterday: “We thank the Nelson Mandela Bay Sport Commission for including cricket as one of the sporting codes allowed to host a competition under the Mayoral Cup banner.

“This is a very exciting development in our club cricket structure and we look forward to working with the NMB sports commission in the future.”
