Shakes Mashaba has taken a lot of bullets for selecting Tokelo Rantie and the thank you he gets from the player is the middle finger.
Rantie has been axed from the Bafana Bafana team after he failed to turn up when players arrived for camp at the hotel in Milpark on Sunday.
The striker also did not show up at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday when the team left for Ouagadougou via Abidjan, despite several calls from team manager Barney Kujane.
Safa bought Rantie, who plays for Turkish club Gençlerbirligi, the plane ticket to come back home for international duty, but he is said to have gone back home to Parys in the Free State and then switched off his phone.
Safa were eventually able to get hold of the player through his sister.
He agreed to come to camp and hand in his passport so they could get him a visa, but when it was time to leave for Ouagadougou on Tuesday, Rantie was nowhere to be found and apparently said he could not find anyone to take him to the airport.
Mashaba, who has stood by Rantie even though the player does not get game time at club level, said he would not condone such behaviour.
“I wash my hands [off of him]. We sent a call-up letter to the club and they released him.”
“We felt what’s the use of letting him go. He’s not part of the team, so we felt that we should let him stay [in South Africa], for the sake of the team spirit,” he said.
“The matter will be dealt with by the hierarchy at Safa. We’ve already written an e-mail.”
Rantie’s absence will affect Mashaba’s plans for the qualifier against the Burkinabe.
“If you have Tokelo in the striking force, there’s something that will happen because he will give defenders a torrid time. He’s a good player.”
Last year, Rantie missed the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Gambia because he was getting married.
He failed to inform the association on time about his wedding plans.
“We all understood the marriage thing. We gave him a chance, but we do not condone this one. I have told him if he gets his act right, he will be one of the best strikers in Bafana,” Mashaba said.
