The NMMU Madibaz notched up their second consecutive win in the Varsity Netball competition when the Port Elizabeth students thumped University of Cape Town 60-29 at the NMMU Indoor Sports Centre last night.
The SPAR Madibaz stars continued with their rich form after beating the University of Johannesburg 58-50 in the City of Gold last week.
The Madibaz were quick off the mark as they scored five goals in the opening five minutes of the first quarter against the UCT side.
Madibaz shooter Nolusindiso Twani continued with her splendid form of the previous fixture and terrorised the UCT goal.
The UCT defence struggled to keep out Twani, who converted all her scoring opportunities to points for the home team. The Madibaz looked to be running away with the game as early as the first quarter as they cemented a solid 20-7 lead.
The second quarter was no better for the visitors and the NMMU Madibaz continued to run rampant and suffocated their opponents as they capitalised off the visitors’ errors.
Attacking winger Sanelise Mgijima supplied Twani and fellow goal shooter Hadrin Tenteni with eight assists from the right wing as the Madibaz solidified their dominance with a 39-13 lead at the halfway mark.
UCT were penalised after the resumption of the third quarter, after coming out late from the change room.
NMMU’s Tenteni scored a screamer after trying to regain her balanced after she had latched on to a pass from Nandipha Jack.
UCT seemed to only come alive in the final quarter, enjoying more of the possession.
However, the Port Elizabeth students cancelled all their efforts and scored four more times in the final power play.
UCT were restricted to only eight goals and could not keep up with the home team who controlled the encounter to walk away as comfortable winners and a secured bonus point.
