Newton Tech powerlifters impress

Seven Newton Tech pupils showed their worth when they competed in the Equipped and Unequipped Powerlifting Championship in George.

In the 74kg division, Olwethu Nyengane took fourth place with a bench press of 85kg, just behind Athenkosi Wilskit, who also pressed 85kg. However, he weighed in slightly lighter than Nyengane and therefore scored more Wilks formula points.

Marvin Slater, also 85kg, finished in second place as he weighed less than Wilskit, while Yonela Mbembe took first place with a press of 155kg.

Mbembe narrowly failed to set a new record of 165kg.

In the 66kg division, Olwakhe Yosa was first with a press of 65kg.

In the 59kg division, Sibulele Raqa pressed 80kg for second place and Thabang Modukanele took top spot with a press of 85kg.

Mbembe, who earned the prize for the best bench-presser of the day, and Modukanele qualified for the South African championships.
