Lyon confirm Omar signing

TOP French rugby club Lyon have announced on their official website that EP Kings defence coach Omar Mouneimne has joined them until the end of the season.

Though EP Rugby have yet to confirm Mouneimne’s move and say they have no agreement with Lyon, the French club have officially welcomed the defence expert to the club.

News broke last week that Mouneimne, who was officially named as the new Kings defence coach only last month, might be packing his bags and heading for Europe.

The club said: “To continuously improve our team, we are pleased to welcome Omar Mouneimne to improve the attitude in contact of the players, ball retention and aggressiveness.

“We are one of the first clubs to hire a coach to develop this very specific set of sectors. This again will help us achieve our goals.”

They quote Mouneimne as saying: “It is a privilege for me to join Lyon. The Top 14 is a competition I have always admired. I love the passion and intensity in French rugby.”

At the end of last season, EP forwards coach Shaun Sowerby left the Kings unexpectedly to link up with former Springbok coach Jake White at Montpellier in France.

Defence was a major headache for the Kings last season. They leaked 53 tries during 10 matches in the Currie Cup Premier Division.

  • The Kings kick off their new season with a friendly match against the Free State Cheetahs at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium next Friday.
