Skipper’s return boosts Madibaz for match against determined Ikeys
SPARKS are expected to fly when a young Madibaz team clash with a determined Ikeys side in a potentially explosive Varsity Cup showdown at Cape Town’s Green Mile tonight. The defending champions have yet to win a game and fighting talk has been coming out of Cape Town as the Ikeys bid to get their challenge up and running against an equally determined Madibaz outfit.
The Ikeys won two trophies last year, picking up the Monte Taljaard trophy against the Madibaz in Port Elizabeth before going on to lift the Varsity Cup at the end of the season.
The Monte Taljaard trophy event is played in memory of the star Grey High School and UCT flank who was killed in a car accident in 2008, with the match between the Ikeys and the Madibaz doubling as a celebration of his life every year.
The Ikeys have made several changes to their squad, with captain Michael Botha making his way back to the starting lineup following an injury sustained before their previous game against Tuks.
Ikeys coach Kevin Musikanth said they would look for the skipper to lead from the front in the NMMU game and provide the technical experience necessary to guide the team.
