South Africa’s disappointing African Nations Cup finals campaign has seen the country drop four places to No 56 in the latest Fifa world rankings released yesterday.
The country also dropped to No 14 in Africa as it was overtaken by Equatorial Guinea, Congo and the DR Congo.
That is bad news with the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup starting later in the year, when the world rankings will be used to determine the seeds for the preliminary competition.
The lower South Africa’s ranking, the higher the chance they will be pitted against one of the continent’s giants for a place in Russia.
Equatorial Guinea jumped 69 places to No 49 in the world.
Algeria remain the top-ranked African side, with Nations Cup winners Ivory Coast second.
Germany remain the top-ranked side in the world, followed by Argentina, Colombia, Belgium and the Netherlands.
