Kyle Schwarz overcame a hesitant start to register an excellent win over elder brother Zane to clinch the Supreme Truck & Trailer Westview Open men’s squash title in a hard-fought final on Friday.
The NMMU player was joined on the winners’ podium by Londt Park’s Lizelle Goosen, who showed some fine touches in disposing of second seed Jacqui Ryder in the women’s final.
The younger Schwarz was seeded second for this tournament, but has established himself as one of the players to beat in Eastern Province squash this year with his impressive win against his talented sibling.
Zane was sharper in the first game as Kyle committed a few errors, which were enough to give the top seed the game 11-5. But Kyle fought back well to level the match and then took control with some excellent deception to keep Zane guessing. In the third game he went ahead 10-5, but then failed to finish off his opponent, who crept back to 10-9 before Kyle clinched it to go 2-1 up.
