Boxers, trainers cry foul over hometown verdict

Gauteng boxing trainer Manny Fernandes says provincial governments must take an active interest in the sport if the hometown decisions in the Eastern Cape are to be stopped.

A furious Fernandes said this after his charge, Oscar “Golden Boy” Chauke, was a victim of a questionable verdict from judges at the PBL final at the Orient Theatre in East London on Sunday.

Chauke did all you would expect from a boxer, beating MacBute Sinyabi, yet the Eastern Cape fighter emerged with an unanimous points decision.

In a six-round fight, Sinyabi only did well in two rounds, meaning he needed a knockout to win by the end of the fight.

But the scores were 59-55 (twice) and 60-55 – in his favour – much to dismay of the fans who booed the decision in spite of it being a home town verdict.
