Match at Saints could be definitive

He match between Fairview Rovers and Lion City at the Saints field tomorrow could go a long way towards deciding who will win the Safa-NMB SAB League soccer title this season.

City are second, five points behind log-leaders Young City, with Rovers a point behind.

Rovers are the form team in the league. Since the Christmas break they have been unstoppable, surging up the table to third place, just a point behind City.

They started the year by thumping neighbours Hotspurs 4-1 and went on to beat Ikamva Movers and Island City, both 3-0.

City, on the other hand, have had a quiet start to the year, starting with a goalless draw against tailenders Camper United before beating Central Aces 1-0 and Despatch Pioneers 2-0.

Meanwhile, Callies will have more than a passing interest in the result of the match in Gelvandale.

The Londt Park outfit are fourth, a point behind Rovers and two points behind City.

A draw will suit them as they will move to joint second, provided they beat Showvillage United at Zwide Stadium.

Like Rovers, Callies have been in top form after the break, collecting maximum points from their three matches and scoring 13 goals in the process. The only concern is that they have leaked seven goals.

With Showvillage struggling in 14th place, the smart money will be on Callies scoring their fourth consecutive win when they meet at Zwide Stadium.

In the unlikely event of Callies slipping up, they could be overtaken by Royal Bucks, who play tailenders Camper United.

Hotspurs who are not having a happy new year, losing three matches on the trot, will find it difficult to end the rot when they play log-leaders Young Ideas at the NU9 Stadium.

As the teams head for the halfway mark in the league programme, Ideas have a comfortable five-point lead. Hotspurs are 12th. Fixtures: Callies v Showvillage United, Camper United v Royal Bucks, Central Acemates v Peace United, Despatch Pioneers v Motherwell Academy, Fairview Rovers v Lion City, Ghetto Stars v Island City, Highland Spurs v Ikamva Movers, Young Ideas v Hotspurs.
