Three athletes did the Nelson Mandela Bay metro proud after they walked away with top honours in the Ironman SA 70.3 team event in East London on Sunday.
Team Vukani 1, comprising cyclist Thembile Nxele, swimmer Luvuyo Nondzinyana and runner Lebo Senti, took a gold medal after they stormed to victory in the team event. The Bay trio finished the race in 4 hours, 37 minutes.
Nxele, who finished in the top 20 at last year’s Herald VW Cycle Tour, said victory had been the team’s top priority.
“Our strategy was simple, to go out there and dominate,” he said.
