Kevin Lerena’s debut set for Europe in March
WBC Silver Youth cruiserweight champion Kevin “KO Kid” Lerena will make his international debut in March, his promoter Rodney Berman announced yesterday.
The Golden Gloves boss said the 23-year-old muscle man was one of the many South African fighters who would feature prominently either in Denmark or Germany in future.
He said it was the result of his recent negotiations with Sauerland Promotions, a German business founded by Wilfred Sauerland in the 1980s but now run by his sons, Kalle and Nisse.
Some of the champions whose careers were guided by Sauerland Promotions, include Nikolai Valuev (former two times WBA heavyweight holder), Arthur Abrahams (former IBF middleweight champion) and former WBA and WBC super middleweight title-holder, Mikkel Kessler.
“We agreed to an exchange deal that is mutually beneficial with European fighters appearing on Golden Gloves’ show in South Africa and local fighters travelling to Europe in turn,” Berman said.
He has already set up a successful base in Monte Carlo and acquired an English promoter’s licence.
