Rovers keep up pressure on leaders with win

Fairview Rovers continued to keep up the pressure on the front-runners in the Safa-NMB SAB League with another emphatic win on Saturday.

The northern areas outfit beat Island City 3-0 at the Jubilee grounds in Uitenhage.

Both teams started cautiously, with Rovers having a slight edge in a goalless first half.

After the break both teams came out in search of the winner despite the heat. Only a brilliant save by Rovers keeper Brendon Prince prevented City from going ahead midway in the half.

Rovers capitalised on the let-off and Joewa Jones made it 1-0 from close range.

The setback seemed to take the sting out of the City attack and it was not long before Wavie Williams made it 2-0.

Romano Tarental completed what turned out to be an easy win in the end when he nodded home a free-kick by Jones.

Young Ideas retained their fivepoint lead on the league table with second-half goals by Siphosethi Twana and Freedom Funani.

Lion City remain hot on their heels following their 2-0 win over Despatch Pioneers.

Despite dominating the game, Lion City had to depend on an own goal to lead 1-0 at the break.

Skipper Sihle Bongo was the main culprit as he could have seen Lion lead by a far bigger margin. He made amends later when he netted to make the final score 2-0.

Callies continued their remarkable climb up the league table with a hard-earned 4-3 win over Royal Bucks. They displace Bucks in fourth place.

Callies squandered a number of easy chances before Keenan Jacobs opened the scoring. Their lead was short-lived as Bucks struck twice to go 2-1 up. Farouk Abrahams then slotted home a penalty to level the scores.

Just before the break Bucks made the half-time score 3-2.

Abrahams levelled the score once more before setting up the winner for Orenthal Jordaan.

An encouraging aspect was the performance by 17-year-old Athi Johannes for Callies.

Motherwell Academy scored their second consecutive win when they beat Pefa neighbours Central Acemates 1-0.

Tail-enders Peace United and Camper United drew 0-0.
