With more than R40 000 in prizes and an accessible start/finish venue, organisers are aiming to attract a bumper turnout of runners for The Herald Rafi’s Builders Warehouse Friendly City Marathon which starts from the Fountain Vineyard Church field behind Builders Warehouse on Saturday February 7.
According to Achilles Club race director Bob Stedman, the 24th event boasts a fantastic variety of prize incentives for keen runners. The race prize money has doubled from last year, in addition to the superb lucky draw prizes from premium sponsors, valued at more than R40 000.
“We aim to appeal to all levels of runners, from the long distance to the fun runner,” Stedman said.
“The 5km route has a convenient early start this year, at 7.30, and is a safe, easy route through the scenic streets of upper Walmer Heights. The 5km route covers no main traffic crossings and is ideally designed for families, prams and pets.
“We would like to encourage schools to support the 5km as Coca-Cola has sponsored generous hampers for the school team with the most entrants.
“Runners will be able to enjoy a family experience with the Fountain Vineyard Church, the venue who will be hosting the start and finish of the marathon, selling refreshments, as well as providing a fun play area for kids.”
Pre-race registration will take place at Rafi’s Appliances and Mattresses in Newton Park on Friday evening, February 6, from 4pm to 7pm and the first 500 entrants at registration will receive free T-shirts and water bottles.
For those participants not in line for a podium finish, there will be plenty on offer, like superb appliance prizes from Rafi’s Appliances and Mattresses, valued at more than R15 000, including fabulous top-loader washing machines and air conditioners.
Builders Warehouse’s prizes are also valued at R15 000 and there will be six pairs of premium running shoes from Adidas, valued at R9 500. In addition, all race finishers will receive medals.
The medal ceremony and lucky draws will take place at the official prize-giving following the marathon at 10.30am.
The Herald Rafi’s Builders Warehouse Friendly City Marathon includes a 42.2km marathon, a 10km race and a 5km fun walk/run.
Runners will line up for the marathon at 5am, the 10km at 6am and the 5km event at 7.30am.
The cost is R100 for the marathon, R50 for the 10km and R30 for 5km fun walk/run. The temporary licence for the marathon and 10km is R30. Marathon runners aged 65 years and over will only pay 50% of race fee, R50.
