Kings player nominated for national honours despite being on losing side.
Fiery EP Kings prop Lizo Gqoboka has been rewarded for an enterprising season in a losing cause by being nominated for the coveted Vodacom Cup player of the year award. Also nominated for the award, to be made on February 8 in Midrand, are Renaldo Bothma (Pumas) and Jonathan Francke (Griquas).
Gqoboka’s personal performances did not go unnoticed because he earned an invitation to train with the Springboks in September.
When Gqoboka was called up, Kings chief executive Charl Crous pointed out that you did not need to be playing Super Rugby to get a national training camp call-up.
“This is brilliant for EP rugby and what we take out of it is that you don’t have to be playing Super Rugby to get a call-up. Lizo deserves the call-up and he has been playing some great rugby,” Crous said.
“Lizo has learnt all his rugby here. I think he is the first Kings player since the ‘Rise of the Kings’ era to be called up by the Boks. Last year Demetri Catrakilis got a call-up while playing for the Southern Kings, but he came from WP.
