PORT Elizabeth athlete Aidan Tuohy is gearing up for the SA championships after scooping top awards during the Friday Night Lights Athletics Series that was held in Port Elizabeth.
Tuohy, 17, won the 100m and 200m track races in all five legs of the series which took place at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and the Westbourne Oval.
Grey High School pupil Tuohy finished the 100m race in the third leg at the Oval in less than 11 seconds.
His excellent performance in the series earned him the best under-19 athlete and the overall best track athlete of the series awards.
Tuohy described the competition as fun but with some tough races.
“It was an absolutely amazing event and I didn’t expect the awards.
“Now I’m feeling much more confident for the upcoming SA championships and my finishing times are looking good for next year’s national competition.
“The event was manageable for me and I think EPA [Eastern Province Athletics] did very well to put it on,” Tuohy said.
Coach Jessi Heatlet said Tuohy deserved to win because he was a hard-working athlete and he had just come back from an injury.
Tuohy is hoping to boost his confidence ahead of the SA championships when he participates in the EPA league meeting at the Oval next month. – Mthetho Ndoni
