Madibaz beat UJ

THE NMMU Madibaz handed hosts University of Johannesburg a 50-25 thrashing in their Varsity Netball clash in Soweto yesterday.

The Eastern Cape side were too strong for their opponents, marching towards a convincing bonus-point win.

The first quarter of the match was hard fought as both sides looked to grab the early advantage, but it would be the visitors taking a 9-5 lead into the first break.

By half time their lead had swelled to a comfortable 24-11 advantage, leaving UJ fighting to stay in the match in front of their home fans.

The third quarter was productive for NMMU as they took their lead to 38-15. The bonus point was wrapped up in the last minute in the compulsory power play.

Defending Varsity Netball champions Kovsies cruised to a convincing 56-29 bonus-point win against Maties in Johannesburg.

The Free State side were in control throughout the match, and ended with a full-house of log points as Maties buckled under the pressure.

Kovsies made a fast start and took a 14-7 lead into the first break. By half time they were 24-12 up.

Maties took the powerplay in the third quarter and managed to make up some ground, but Kovsies were already too far away to be caught.

The only question in the final quarter was whether Kovsies would claim the bonus point, which they did fairly easily in the end.
